Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya is one of the world’s most celebrated slide guitarists and a pioneering innovator in Indian Classical Music. Over a career spanning five decades, he transformed the six-string Hawaiian guitar into a complete Indian classical instrument through the invention of the Chaturangui, and later created the Gandharvi, Pushpa Veena, and Anandi. His research across vocal and instrumental traditions led to the development of a unique and comprehensive gayaki ang for slide guitar, incorporating elements of dhrupad, khayal, and thumri.
A Grammy-nominated artist, having performed with legendary artistes such as Ustad Zakir hussain, Ballake Sissoko, John McLaughlin, and being the first Indian inductee into the World Music Hall of Fame, he has performed at major international festivals and concert halls across the globe. Beyond his artistic achievements, he has mentored generations of musicians and inspired a global movement in Indian classical slide guitar. His legacy is defined by innovation, scholarship, performance excellence, and cultural impact.
